Hessew New Year!

It is new year's eve.

Biked yesterday for a half hour because it was terribly windy outside, and I'm still a baby.

Today, ran to the lake and back. Callin' it 3.3 to round off a grand total of...

2640 miles for the year.

Overall, I was quite please with running progress this year; however, miles dramatically decreased since August.
Not sure how this next semester's mileage will play out. I don't expect to see a lot of miles, but I do have high hopes for spring and summer.

Skate Running

The snow is melting here and then it freezes again during the night. This leaves plenty of ice to run on.

4.5 to the lake and back. A little farther than the other day in order to avoid mud traps.
Tried Abby's approach with a small PT warm up prior to the run.
More PT after the run.
Alternated push and sit.

Totals:

175 push
250 sit

Saturday, December 27, 2008

Quick Draw

120 varied push
240 varied sit

Woke up this morning, used the facilities, and went straight into a quarter block quick draw.

Lots of weakness leaving the body today.

Slush Fest 2008

To the lake and back.

Still feel incredibly out of shape.
It's a little depressing, but an excellent challenge to get back into shape.

Happy Holidays Still!

Happy Festivus

3.4 mi run today.

It's depressing how out of shape I am.
Two blocks into the run I was already out of breath.
First half was ok temperature wise, but coming back was into the wind.
It was very cold.

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

Quick Draw

No run.

PT instead.

11 sets of 10x varied push and 20x varied sit
2x100 fire haulers. These were especially difficult today. Lots of fire. Lots of weakness leaving the body.

Totals:

110 push
220 sit
200 fire

Happy Holidays!

Heat Wave

32 degrees outside and feels like 22.
The sun even poked through the clouds today.

4.3 miles.
No watch.
Feel very out of shape.

Forecast for the rest of the week looks ideal for running.

Staying Inside

It's cold, and I'm still a baby.

Did a random workout today.
Sit, push, arm-haulers, lunges

Totals:

180 push
150 arm haulers
180 three-way lunges
300 sit

So scarewee outsite

I was a big baby today and did not go outside to run.
I could have, but didn't. Not because I wasn't motivated, not because I'm hurt, hungry, tired, or dehydrated. I didn't run outside just because I'm a big baby.

Decided to do quick PT while watching third Matrix.

110 push
130 sit
150 fire

today I made sure that each rep was complete. All the way down and up at a slow pace.
There was more burn today.
Did a sit up variation that was half leg-lever with half sit. It was sort of like folding myself in half. Just not all the way.

Went x-mas shopping today. I hate shopping. There are few things that I hate, but I hate shopping. I rarely use the word hate also, but I hate shopping. I feel like punching everyone I see right in the face when I'm shopping. If I could murder shopping I would.

Good day to you all.
I hope everyone's shopping experience goes better than mine.

Winter Chill

In Omaha.
10 degrees outside.
Around 3 in. of snow on the ground.
Feet were numb at the end of this run.
Eyelashes had ice on them.
Am very out of shape.
Lost watch during the trip home.
Probably around 3 miles today.

200 varied sit

The 100 plan doesn't look very achievable right now.
Might have to find a new goal.
Thoughts?

Quater Quick Draw

In a hotel in KC right now. Just ate some fiber rich cereal.
Did a quarter quick draw, which means, instead of 10x10 it was 4x25 blocks.
Push ups were good. Did them quick. Will need to work on form. Don't think I went down far enough. Not enough burning.
Sit ups were harder. Did 4x50. Good burning. Satisfactory workout.

The weather channel says there is a huge cold front coming through the midwest. Charles, if you have not finished your workout yet I would suggest getting it done before the wall of ice hits you.
It's supposed to drop around 40 degrees. Whew.

Keep warm.

We all suffer, but some of us choose when and where.

Yesterday and Today

First real run yesterday in a long long time. Over a month I think.
Pushed the pace because a) I hadn't run in a long time and I was excited to get back, and b) I had a lot of built up tension from finals. It was in the 40s and raining. I didn't care. The lungs begged for air, the heart didn't know what was going on, and the legs got rid of some weakness. I am out of shape, but it felt great to get back out there.
Did a little over 5 miles in a little over 32 in. Right around 6:30s.
Finals are all done!
-----------------------
Today, ran 4 with Leah. Easy today. Legs tight from yesterday's run.
Nice easy run. around 8:30-8:45 pace.

Time for sleep.

I fly to Omaha tomorrow, but drive straight to KC as soon as I get there.
Family emergency.

Peace to all who welcome it and those who deserve it.

Quick Draw

It's not 1:32am.

Without exaggeration, I studied all day.
Woke up, studied, got ready, ate lunch, studied, went to presentation, studied, Dx final, dinner, study, back to dorm, study, and finish.

In consideration of time, decided to do anther quick draw.
8: 54 quick draw, 13:00 completion
10 sets 10x varied push 20x varied sit
100 fire haulers
took a break for a few min
100 more fire haulers (the fire started at 18 on this set!)

total time including the second fire hauler set was around 13:00 min.
total:
100 push
200 sit
200 fire haulers

Lots of weakness leaving the arms, abs, and lots of fire!

Hope everyone is well.

Time for sleep.

no excuses

my mentality has been lazy. yes, i am busy, but that is not excuse.

here is proof:
quick draw workout.
10x alternating 10 varied push/20 varied sit

The Sickness

I have the sickness.
Nothing terribly bad. Just a little something to bother the throat, cause the body to ache, and make the head ache as well.
Wasn't bad this morning but has progressively worsened throughout the day.

An attempt was made to swim the sickness out of the body.
Leah had a key to the pool, so we headed over there this afternoon. She did a crazy swim workout while I did some aqua jogging and other misc. swimming. About an hour and a half of exercise.
Workout felt good, but the body does not.

Slept nearly 12 hours last night. The body must have been preemptively fighting off the attack. Plan to sleep well tonight and keep the fluids running. The body will adapt, fight, and win. The sickness will be utterly destroyed at its attempt.

The sickness has reminded me of my health, and how well I feel in its absence.
It's humbling to be reminded to what we often take for granted.
This is a good reminder.

Quick Draw

Skrew it. I'm doing push ups.

It's 2 in the morning. I had just finished eating two sets of banana and pretzel, two peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and half a small bag of delicious potato chips. I was feelin' a little lazy, so I hit the floor with what I'm calling, the Quick Draw:

alternating push and sit with <10 sec break in between:
5x20 push
7x20 sit

the two extra sets of sit come from doing sides.

then, inspired by Charles's Mammoth workout, I figured, I should try to push the limit with one set of max fire haulers.
The first 70 felt good. This is when the sting started.
The fire started around 90.
Past 110 was a fight for each extra hauler.
113, c'mon you can do more!
123, if you're arms are still moving then keep counting.
133, you're past your goal. Just do 20 more.
153, holy feck! holy feck!
at this point no matter how much effort I put into the motions the main fight was to keep the hands from dragging on the ground.
160, the hands drag, I stop.
I breath heavily and lay down the arms waiting for the fire to extinguish.
I get up. It is done.

...
...

now it is time for sleep.

let us see what this day will bring

------------------
It's now 11:45am.
Just finished showering and going to go eat soon.
It's a nice day outside.
A low stress and very relaxing day.
HAPPY HOLIDAY to all!

4 easy with Leah. 34:52 (8:05 pace)
The foot pain returns.
Should I keep running under 4 mi. each day, or take more time off?
Advice? Suggestions?

Back in Black

First day back from foot recovery.

Felt FANTASTIC to get back out there.
Ran 2 easy with Leah to test the foot.
It performed well. No pain.
3x[20 sit,30 lunges,20 push]
30 leg throwers

Total:
90 sit
90 lunge
60 push

This was a quick and easy PT. Nothing compared to the Mammoth numbers that Charles is knocking out.
Feels great to get back out there. The legs feel amazing. This break has been the longest break since started running. Plan to gradually increase miles.

A good day.

Thought of the Week

5x20 bed push-ups (push ups in bed while watching a movie)
2x75 arm-bed-haulers (fire-haulers in bed while watching a movie)
2xbanana and pretzels (two bananas with a pretzel each bite)

Here is my Thought of the Week

You ever have that experience, you know, when you’re wearing jeans, and there is that little bulge by your crotch?
When your jeans turn against you and make it look like you have a small erection.

These jeans don’t care if you have a penis or not. They’re going to make it look like you do. Especially when you sit down.

I hate that.
People have tried many ways to get rid of this phantom bulge.
You tried to move it up. You know, by trying to tuck it under your belt. Fuck. That doesn’t work.
You try to pat it down, but that only works until you move, and then, poof. It’s back. Why does this happen?
Do jean makers think people want extra room? Really.
Damn you small crotch protrusion.
You embarrass us.
You make us question ourselves. Should I be aroused right now?
I mean, that’s why it’s there.
Isn’t it?

Healing

Still healing.

At what point do we stop healing at start deteriorating?

4x50 sit ups this morning.

Stayed up until 5 am this morning watching movies.
It was glorious.

Cardio replacement therapy

Decided to do different types of cardio and workout this week in order to give the foot some time to heal.

Last night, did PT set.
10 sets
6x pull
15 x push
25 x sit
25 x arm haulers
---
3x weighted (5lb) birds.
Calling these birds because I'm not sure what else to call them. They are those shoulder exercises when you lift your arms directly in front and to the side. They are called birds because if you do them really fast it looks like you're flapping your arms.

Also, not really sure how effective arm haulers are with low reps. I'm calling them arm haulers today because there was no fire. Only 25 a set is not enough to get the fire going. Although, they did feel heavy and worked, which is a good thing. I guess they were doing something, but they definitely did not have the burn.

Totals:
60 pull, 150 push, 250 sit and arm hauler, 30 bird front, 30 birds, 30 bird back

------------------
Today, decided to bike.
1 hour bike inside with Leah.
To pass the time we made up a story about a man traveling the world that crashed in the desert. On the second night a small boy found him and took him to the underground city, which was full of children. No adults at all. The man ended up getting all the tools and such needed to repair his plane. He found his way back, fixed the plane, and took off. Then, he fell asleep at behind the "wheel".
It turned out to all be a dream, but it was such a magical dream. There were secret doorways with magic passwords and endless amounts of toys.
We took turns making up different parts of the story.

Good stuff.

Wondering what happened to the third member of our team. He has disappeared.

With ease and patience one can lead.

Relaxing Sunday

Slept in this morning.
Leah texted, we decided to swim and aqua jog this afternoon.

Just finished some sit ups and fire haulers before heading to swim.
8x25 varied sit.
3x90 fire haulers.
The last set of fire haulers held true to their name.
The arms feel wobbly as I type.

Will check back in after swim run.

---------

40 min. aqua jog
10 min treading water
random swimming 60 min.

pool water makes the skin dry.
the lotion is used.

the aqua jog is still awkward.

Long run

30 mi. today.
Hit up FDR island, then found a beautiful trail that went to Rock Creek Park.
Great run.
Hit the wall at 3:20. Finished at 4:43.
Refilled water at a gas station.
Could have used more food.
Legs ached all evening.
Feel much better today.
Foot swollen.

Ran home from a rally, two miles, in pouring rain, soaked head to toe in street clothes, with my backpack. It was freakin' sweet.

Need to cut back on the chips.
They are delicious.

Tweak, Bounce the Beat

Do it. Take the beat, and bounce it. You'll be surprised.

Another off day for the foot boo boo.

Super pumped for the 30 tomorrow. So excited I want to skip class. It would be freakin' sweet to wake up at 4 and hit the road, but the plan it to head out after class around 10:30.

Currently, in this stage of life I have had strong desires for a companion. I'm not referring to the "gettin' down" aspect of intimacy, rather, just having a strong connection with someone you can trust. It is, a test of patience.

The Hunger

it is often that the hunger strikes late at night. For example, right now, the hunger strikes. One would think that a cup of pineapple and a banana would fend off the hunger. Sadly, it has not. The hunger can strike with great force and hypnotize one with desires of temping foods. These food will not be spoken of as it may spread the hunger, and cause it to strike YOU!

Day off today. No PT, no run.
However, did get in 30 min of aqua-jog. Although, it is uncertain that today's aqua-jogging would be considered exercise. Mostly, it was a series of awkward kicking and arm-flailing motions. Basically to keep the head above water.
This "aqua-jog" that people speak of is quite a unique and cumbersome task.

Today, muscles of the stomach and arms are blessed with the soreness. This is good news.

Received a call from the brother today saying the Monster, the dog, had suffered a seizure in the early hours of the morning. Having been rushed to the emergency vet he was comfortably sedated. Later in the morning he was taken to another vet clinic. There, he was placed on oxygen and monitored closely. After several hours, his prognosis quickly improved. Currently, he is at home with the brother. Monster is a trooper and has served those he loves with dog licks, refreshing dog breath, and sometimes little squirts of urination. Just to show how excited he is to see you.
We, the family, are quite relieved that he is doing better, and we hope that his time is far in the distance.
We love you Monster Dog.

Forgetting the Days

Today is Tuesday. Although, it doesn't feel like Tuesday. Ever get that feeling where days and weeks blend into one continuous flow?
Feel like I have been getting more sleep lately. 6-8 hours.
Although, I still don't go to sleep until I pass out. Last night it hit at 2am.

No run today. Was inspired by The Duke's blog to take it easy on the smaller runs and focus on priority runs. The foot has temporary halted running. It throb, aches, and every now-and-then spasms. Also, my testicles have disappeared.

PT workout today.

10 sets
6x pull, 12x push, 25x sit
Hit the wall on set 9 for the pulls. Failure at 10. YES!

Totals
60 pull
120 push
250 sit

Happy with today's PT.
Now, eating some cantaloupe and pretzels.

Time to shower and knock out a lab. Are you ready lab? I'm going to punch you right in the face!

Errors are human nature. Only so, because errors are defined by judgment.

The pain

There are different kinds of pain.
Some kinds of pain one can put up with.
This foot pain, is something that can be put up with, but wouldn't be smart.
There is a problem on the foot. The bone that the Achilles is attached to.
It feels like a small grenade blew up in my foot.

It wasn't bad yesterday, and I was walking around with minimal pain this morning, so I figured another run would be ok.
Did The Mall 10 loop again.
Ran in front of the White House but was stopped by security. A lot of people were looking off to the right of the White House. I thought, what the heck are people looking at, the House is over there!
I asked the cop what the deal was. He gave me a BS snobby answer. I went on my way.
I just figured people were waiting for the magic tree to do its thing. There is a magical tree just to the right off the White House that will randomly shoot out loads of colorful butterflies. It's quite dangerous because they are shot out of the limbs of the tree at a high rate of speed, but, it's also very beautiful.

Got back from the run, and limped like I was just kicked in the balls. Ok, maybe not that kind of limp. Maybe more like the grenade thing.
Must not have been a wise decision to run today.
Plan on recovering more this week.
Moving the 30 up to Friday because Saturday is full of class and other school work.

Butterflies, are beautiful, but can be dangerous at high rates of speed.

Sunday Runday

Easy 10 today. 1:23:10. 8:18 or so.
Slept in this morning.
Woke up with the sun shining through the window cooking my unconscious body.
Knew it was going to be a good day.
Great weather outside.
Downed some pretzels, bananas, water, and headed out.
Nice to see all the touristy people out. Keep the mind distracted.
Rolled the left ankle a few times. Kept chuggin'.
You gotta keep chuggin'. No matter what.
Probably same hip-flexor issues and the Duke (Charles).
Stretched it well. Didn't seem to be enough though.
Will stretch more later.
Watched a few movies this weekend.
Makes me want to find a movie-star-looking girlfriend. Damn you movies. Unrealistic.
Now, doing some late night studying and laundry.
Pretzels go great with tasty liquid.
Hip-hop lolly-pop.

Have had the urge to do something amazing lately. Not sure what it's going to be, or when, but I know it must be amazing.

Going to try and recruit some people to run/bike/help out with this weeks long run.
Might head down to The Three Bears again.

Seek understanding with patience and ye shall be enlightened with a gift that cannot be given.

Saturday, November 8, 2008

The leaves...

are beautiful. Changing colors and all. Quite calming.
Great weather here. 60's all week.
Foot still causing problems, or is it my testicles? Hmm, sometimes it's hard to distinguish.
Decided, "F-it, I'm running."
Good run. Heart felt good.
Ultra style. Short easy stride.
10 mi. in 1:24:49. 8:30's or so.
Went past some hippie tents down at the Mall today. There was a protest that had something to do with Darfur.
Saw the White House today. That's a big house. It's like a fancy motel.
It kind of reminds me of the ghetto. Other than the manicured lawn and nice paint.
There are lots of bars to keep you out. There are cops everywhere. And you don't want to f-up because lots of people have guns.
10 set PT when returned.
5x pull, 10x varied push, 20x varied sit
1x20 all sit set
75x2 fire haulers (formerly known as arm-haulers)
Totals:
50 pull
100 push
360 sit
150 fire haulers

Pulls were most difficulty. Sits were great. Felt the effort. Not easy, but feel the pain just they should. Push were easy, next time will do more. Fire-haulers brought on the burn, and lots of it, hence the new name.

Damnations

Well, here's the gist of it. Tuesday and Wednesday ended up being off days. After a stellar sixer Monday I woke up hobbling as if someone had stabbed my Achilles. "Crap."

Stretching didn't seem to help. I'm not really sure what the problem is or how to solve it. Leah thinks it has something to do with my knee. The knee hasn't caused any problems for a while, but the Achilles is doing a wonderful job keeping me from running.

After two forced days rest, I decided to give it a try tonight. I was optimistic. Feeling good, but after a mile I knew it would be wise to stop. I ended up finishing the 2 loop.

Now, feeling like a deflated balloon I decided to go work out. Headed to the gym and decided to a a PT. 10 sets: 5x pull, 15x varied push and sit. Going strong until set 7. Excellent, this is what should happen with a good PT. Finished with plenty of struggle and grunting. It's nice to work out here, you can make as many grunting noises as you want without people looking at you weird. Either they can't hear you, or they think you can't hear yourself. Win Win.

Added in a 20x all sit ups for the extra burn. Lots of fire and burning is the abs.
2x75 arm haulers. Those are perfect for mental toughness. To keep my mind occupied I counted the threads on the carpet--one thread for each 'hauler'. Threw in 25x2 neck.

Hit the weights for some shoulder work. Hoo-cha!
Pleased with the workout.

Lots of his and leg stretching. Hoping that will help dissolve or prevent any hic-ups that might occur.

Total:
50 pull ups
270 sit ups
150 push ups
150 arm haulers

Hope all is well in Nebraska. Word is the blizzards are there.
Hope all is well in Hawaii. Word is perfect weather is there.
Hope all is well on planet 245x. Word is massive butterfly attack.

For those who need strength and steady hand during travel.

Advocating Universal Hearing Screenings

That's what I have been reading and writing about all day today. Paper due tomorrow. Solid 5 hours on it this afternoon, and an on/off evening session. Finally wrapped it up at exactly 12:00am.

There are many aspects of running that can be applied to other situations. For example, writing this paper. The five hours was sort of like a long run. It was a little slow starting, found a nice groove in the middle, had to stop a few times to stretch and rehydrate, and near the end got a little hungry.

The evening section of the paper was just like on/offs. Short durations of work and productivity followed by moments of lag and distraction (like a dog trying to not pay attentions to that delicious bbq flavored pig ear lying right next to him).

Decided to take today off. The hip flexors are a bit tight today, which must mean they were worked well yesterday. However, that's not why I decided to take today off. Mainly, my focus and goal today was to complete this paper. Success! Proud of today. Set a goal, worked hard and diligently, and completed it. Another reason why wasn't too motivated to run today was to give the body rest. The stomach didn't feel to hot this morning, and after putting some food in the belly it was still uneasy. Now, things are back to normal. I talked myself into listening a little more to what my body is trying to say rather than push through everything. Yesterday's run was only the second time where I was really concerend about my health (the first being kidney irritation during the 75er). Even though it's hard to understand for me, but I have been told that rest is just as important as training.

Good news, got over 8 hours of sleep last night and I'm looking to get another solid sleep tonight. Just last night I woke up the one of those half-awake/half-asleep dreams. I though people were coming over and had all of their luggage in my room. I thought to myself, "oh shit, I was sleeping when everyone stopped by and I didn't even wake up when they came in!" After lying back down for a bit I was able to analyize what was going on and that, in fact, there were no visitors coming and that the room did not have a bunch of luggage in it. It was pretty trippy.

Extra bonus points for those who ran today.
Hope all is well west and even farther west.

Happy time change to all!

Peace and comfort

Equilibrum, Great things only last so long

Interesting run today. Would describe it as the single most exciting solo run of my life that quickly turned into a "death march".

Headed out to the Regan Airport park area and decided to hit up the trail in the opposite direction. Trail was decent, lots of bikers, but then it got interesting when I noticed a little side trail. Naturally, I followed it. At first, it was just a calm and scenic single-track trail. It runs right along the Potomac River. Had the opportunity to test out the trailing capabilities of the Omni-6's as the trail started to develop into a rock path. Only but a brief time later I found myself walking. Why? Because I was climbing over rocks, small boulders, and crossing streams created by water falls. Pretty amazing scenery.

This trail was, by far, the most technically challenging course I have ran on. On more than one occasion one slip of the foot or stumble would have sent me 40 feet over a small cliff onto jagged rocks. Also, more than once I was actually scaling rocks, grabbing roots and all, up very steep inclines that left very little room for error.

There were three larger water falls that had to be crossed. I have decided to name, Baby Bear, Momma Bear, and Poppa Bear. The last of the waterfalls, Poppa Bear, required patience and the sure 'footed-ness' of a Mountain Goat. I literally scaled, hiked/walked up a 1000 foot cliff. The last two miles near Poppa Bear took 30 minutes to cover just over 2 miles. This part was defiantly the highlight of the run.

On the way back, one bad thing happened after another. First off, the left Achilles was extra tender considering its use was maximized in order to get over those rocks. The left knee, felt like exploding from within nearly every time I had to descend rocks, which was quite a bit. Lastly, I would guess it was around mile 8 that I was struck with nausea. I would later find out that this nausea would plaque the rest of the run.

I had run just past Poppa Bear when I came upon Chain Bridge. My predetermined turn around point. The way back was just as exciting. Besides the small list of ailments I was having the best solo run of my life. Just at Momma Bear I decided to stop and try the water. I used my handkerchief to filter whatever bad things it could possibly filter and filled the cap of my bottle. It was nice and cool. Not knowing if the water was good for drinking or not could have been a mistake. What can I say, I just had to. How often does that opportunity come up. For a little bit, I felt like a real Mountain Man.

Leaving the Potomac Trail things started to get ugly. After finding out how far I had gone of the Potomac Trail I calculated that I would have to hit up the Regan Airport Park to get in all 25mi. It was ok. Mentally, it was boring, but physically it things were getting worse. By now, I would do a running dry-heave every 10 min. or so while still dealing with the nausea.

By time I had hit the turn around it was very close to dark, and on the way back I noticed a biker in a slight dilemma. It was an attractive young lady, which subconsciously might have been the main reason for me turning around (I know, it's shallow, but I have stopped for ugly old men too, so I would like to think that I would have helped anyone given the situation). Her chain had fallen off and she was fiddling with it in the dark. Just after I had start to help her another biker, with a light, also stopped and helped. His light turned out to provide a large contribution considering I had no idea what I was doing. I just thumbed around with it until it went back on. Turns out, the young lady was French, or at least, sounded French. She had a sweet accent. With the chain back on, I was back on the path. This little distraction had taken my mind off the nausea, that is, until I started running again.

Just at 3:23 on the watch, I finally gave into the nausea and started a walk, jog, dry-heave cycle. Not fun. Started to think about other options to get home. It was pretty ugly, but I thought of taking it one step at a time and to not wuss out. I found a water fountain at one point and drank a bit. It helped for a minute when I wretched it back up. Several times I had to stop and decorate a tree or part of the sidewalk with my stomach fluid designs.

It took around 4:10 to complete the 25mi, which is a lot slower than I had planned. Although, I did stop my watch every time my stomach wanted to jump out. Even now, as I type, the stomach is mad, but I'm not sure why. I don't think it was the potential hazard waterfall water considering I was nauseous prior to that point.

In the end, I made it home alive!
The run started an a B, peaked at and A++, and ended with a D-.
It must have been a combination of things that all added up. Another night of 4 hour sleep, stress with school, Boogie Fever, an exploding knee, and Kermit the Frog.

I hope this post isn't too depressing. Let's end it on a positive note. The Potomac Trail was a freakin' sweet place to run. I will definitely go back and fine-tune those rock running skills.

Here is a link that has pictures of the trail. It looks just like that, only prettier.

Happy Halloween

It was absolutely gorgeous outside today. Went outside expecting it to be chilly, but it turned out perfect. Was excited to get done with business so I could go run.

Also, it was another late night last night. Up 'till 4am, slept for a bit, then back up at 8am.

Headed to the Nat'l Mall 6mi route. Took it very easy today.
Stepped into a new pair of Saucony Omni-6's.
They didn't help the clicking "neuroma" or the tender achilles, but they better then the Brooks Glycerin.

Longer run tomorrow, and long paper tomorrow. Going to rock them both.

Halloween today. Went to Scott's place tonight and hung out with some other students. Charlene popped her knee cap out of place and it was on the outside of her leg. Where a knee cap shouldn't be, but like a trooper she popped it back it, got some ice, popped some tylenol, and did it all in stride.

Hung out with Jo tonight. Went to George Town. It was madness. Hords of people on the sidewalks. It was fun. Saw a lot of interesting and creative costumes.

Happily Spook Day to all!

Peace of mind and Tranquility

Today is Thursday

Another late night last night. Workin' hard! Like a rock! A rock that sits.
To bed around 2:30am. However, got an excellent night of sleep. Was able to sleep in until 10:30am. WOO! Sleep to the max.

Good day today. Good day. I am happy.

Ate some delicious lunch, went to diagnostics, did some research on presidential candidates in order to make a more informed decision, went to class, then got ready to run.

With dark hair, a black long sleeve shirt, black shorts, and black socks, I threw in some color today with a blue handkerchief (sp?) around the neck. Headed to the Nat'l Mall area. This is a flat, 6mi, out and back route. There is also a 10mi. route to the Lincoln Monument that runs through the mall area, but took the 6 instead. Good run. Felt good. Breathing good. "Neuroma" clicking like crazy. On the streets and sidewalks it clicks more often. Left achilles tender at the base, not sure why.

Had Dr. Leah, the triathalete linguistics student, look at it and work her magic. Plenty of weakness leaving when she did her thing. She worked that spot behind my knee also. DAMN! Lots of weakness being forced out. At times, it felt like my knee was going to explode from inside. Hope to pick up the new Saucony Omni-6's tomorrow. Maybe that will help with these issues.

Hung out with Jo for a bit tonight. Hadn't seen her for a while now since we both have been quite busy.

What is everyone going to be for Halloween? I have decided to be Hank. Hank is a guy that acts, dresses, and mimics every characteristic of Ben (me). I don't think if will be hard to find a costume.

Also, been following Dean Karnazes Blog, http://rodale.typepad.com/deans_run_home/, for a few weeks. He's finishing up the last of the four desserts quest. It's pretty interesting.

Back to work. Don't forget to step back everyonce in a while, take a good 'look' at things around you, and appreciate what has become.

Did I Mention Dimension

Holy carp. Yep, that's right. It's says carp. Carp is what you get when you misspell crap. Anyways, holy carp. What is going on with my sleep? Last night, I worked until 3am, and not the kind of "work" where one sits around, fiddles with Facebook, does a little bit of real work, and procrastinates until three in the morning. No, this was true-biz work. The plan was to wake up just before 8am, get ready, and meet two other outstanding students for a lab. Shit! Woke up to hear my roommate busting in the the room because he was late for class. "Wait," I think to myself. "What time is it?" After figuring out where I was and what day it could be, I glanced over at my phone to see that it was 10! Shit, I slept in again!
I ended up missing class as well in order to work on a paper due at 1pm. Sincere apologies were made to the other group members and I hope they understand my mishap.

The day, after the late start, was once again busy as an ant farm back from holiday. Skipped lunch in order to keep working on that paper, finished it during that class that it was due for, and ended up finishing business just after 3. This gave me an hour to print that paper, turn it in, get some food in me since I hadn't eaten, and get ready to join the XC team at 4pm.

A little before 4 I did a 2 mi. warm up. It was a little fast for a warm up. However, excitement ran through my veins to be running with the team. Did the 2 wu on campus in exactly 14 min.

Went to the spot where XC typically meets and waited. I felt a little pressed for time since I was meeting Mallory, a continuously smiling elementary ed. grad. student, at 5pm. It ended up only being Kala, Coach, and myself. We headed to the Nat'l Mall area for a Fartlek workout. By time we got there only a 10 min. window remained in order to allow myself enough time to get back by 5. Was able to get in some good burning and rev up the heart rate before heading back. Ended up with 8 mi. today in 57:48 (7:13 pace).

Got the the dorm, took a Duke (Charles) fast shower (meaning, sub-four minutes), and met smiles (Mallory) for....(food). Yeah, I know. ( ) overkill. )))

The photo gig that was planned for tonight ended up being cancelled. The event wasn't cancelled, just that they ended up postponing my photo skill trial until next Monday.

Time to focus and work like a Muskrat.

Wasabi Soy Almonds....

are freakin' delicious. Have you ever had them? They are spectacular. However, after eating a few, I was quickly reminded that wasabi=spicy. They are still tasty wonderful.

Today in class we talked about literacy and how kids learn to read. This brought up an interesting area of literacy. As hearing, English speaking adults, we tend to naturally predict the end of sentences with what we would find to be logical conclusions. For example, fill in the rest of the sentence, "The gigantic ship, floating on the water, was .........."
Let's see where you go with that, and I'll explain the rest later.
Basically, I think that the common response by a reader would lack imagination, and with adulthood only a few retain their childlike imaginations.

Did a 7:20 pace 6 mi. today around campus. It's 43 degrees, a little breezy, and a little precipitous. Nothing to complain about by any means, it just means that I put on more gear. At the end of the run my heads was steaming. Pretty cool I think.

Headed inside the gym for some quality leg/hip stretching and a small PT--because the gym was to close shortly. Did 5 rotating sets of 8 pull-ups and a 50 varied sit-ups. One of the sit-up sets was 50 each side. Does that count for 100, or 50 total?
Depending on how it's counted, totals: 40 pull, 300 varied sit, and 3x30 shoulder pull back things. They are easy, but do they ever bring the burn!

Overall, I feel better today than the past two. Hopefully that little down period is over with. Perhaps it's the extra Vitamin C intake.

The greatest challenge is to care for those who do not care for you.

Sunday Struggle

Stayed up reading last night. Up pretty late. Passed out and didn't wake up until 11:30 or so. Shit, I was going to run in the morning. I guess that's out of the plan.

Then, a big mental downer came up. The day hadn't even started and already felt overwhelmed and behind. How can that be when I havn't even gotten out of bed?

The requirements of the day. I call them that because it didn't really feel like it's what I wanted to get done, rather, what I had to get done. This included, a 15 mi. solo run, putting together a presentation for tomorrow night, studying for an exam in the morning, and doing laundry because I'm out of clean clothes.

Well, instead of hopping out of bed right away and getting those thing done I decided to read for 4 hours. Why does this happen? Why didn't I just do what needed to be done? I didn't, this 4 hour reading fest only pushed me back four more hours.

Right around 3:00pm I decided to get the run over with. Was not looking forward to this run at all. Honestly, the only reason why I ran today was because I knew the Anton and the Charles would be working hard.

Finally headed out. Decided to run through the National Mall area and head towards a park that's right near Regan Airport. It's actually quite an interesting place. One can watch the planes take-off and land. They also fly directly overhead by only a few hundred feet. However, even with all of the amazing things that I ran past I couldn't get over not having that "high" that often feeds each run. It just wasn't there today. I wonder if it has something to do with being tired. I got a solid 8.5 hours of sleep last night, and not just a solid sleep. I'm talking about the kind of heavy sleep that's equivalent to a dead guy, or someone who's hardcore drunk passed out. I was tired after the run also. This isn't a regular feeling for me, especially after getting plenty of sleep. Something subconscious happening? Virus? Being a wuss? Is it the sickness? Whatever it may be, I hope it runs it's course and the thrill for running returns.

Ended up having a good overall pace for the run. Possibly because I kept "racing" other runners. I just didn't want them to pass me. I must be faster than them! Ahhhhh!

Got back around 5:30pm and stretch the legs. They were tight, which I think had to do with low fluids. Went to dinner, and didn't have an appetite, which is another clue that makes me think something else is going on. Maybe I have tapeworm, or perhaps Boogie Fever.

Tonight's activities include laundry, finishing this presentation while hanging out with Charlene (a super rad chick), and studying for this exam.

Good night to all, and have a wonderful Monday!

Super Soaker Saturday

Long run today. 15 mi. Planned on going easy, but went a little faster.

Headed out with Leah. She biked while I ran. Went to the Arboretum. Forecast said rain, but it was only overcast when we departed. About 30 min. into the run, after Leah and I had split up, it started to pour. I don't mean pour water on the flower pot kind of pour, I mean Brazilian rainforest kind of pour. It was great! However, two problems. I figured Leah wouldn't be able to continue because the streets were flooding with water, and second, it was a bit cold. It was cold enough and wet enough that if you stopped moving, or slowed down enough, you would freeze.

Completely soaked head to toe. Met Leah back at the front and we headed back. The shoes were already soaked so I decided to have some fun and splash/run through the biggest puddles I could find. Sometimes you just have to play the cards you're dealt...or throw them around.

We got back, leah headed inside, and I decided to finish up the run. Overall it was a satisfactory run. Although, the legs are tight at f because the hot/cold, long run combinations.

Tomorrow is designated for run in the morning, study, and laundry.
Also, Marine Corp Marathon is tomorrow. Decided not to go watch even though it might be a good source of motivation/inspiration.

Peace and Happiness.

Woops

Accidentally slept through class this morning. Good thing it was canceled. Went to bed just after 2, set the alarm for 7:30, and didn't wake up until the roommates alarm went off at 10. Crap.

Ended up taking another day off. Definitely feel the results from yesterday's PT workout. Yes, exactly what I wanted.

Going to hit it good tomorrow and Sunday with a pair of 15s. Hopefully after a little warm up the back will ease into it and the annoyance will dissolve.

Quick post today.

Planning a great weekend of running and studying.

Deflated

Like an old balloon I'm a little deflated today.
Headed out this afternoon hoping to join in with the XC team on their run. No shows.
Did an easy mile on the track to see how things would shake up. Not so well. This morning woke up with lower back stabbing. Charles, do you remember when I f-ed up my back just before Lincoln Marathon doing hop-scotch on the side walk? Well, that's what it feels like. Hopefully it's gone tomorrow. Also, the left foot is being a little pain-in-the....foot. Achilles is tender and "neuroma" is still causing annoyances.
Good news, ordered some new Saucony Omni-6's yesterday. Hopefully they will arrive by next week. It will be good to get some solid shoes on the feet again.
More good news, successfully struggled through an excellent teeth-grinding PT workout today. Decided to do PT since I wasn't going to run.
Pull, Push, Sit (varied)
5, 10, 20
5, 18, 30
5, 22, 40
5, 50*, 50
5, 30, 50
5, 22, ^50
5, 18, 30
5, 10, 20

Total: 40 pull, 180 push, 290 sit
*woops
^feel the burn, bring the pain atomics!

This was a great PT physically, but didn't give that mental boost that one typically gets after completing a solid PT. It's all mental, and I was just a little off today. Not trying to complain, just wondering what the body is trying to say. Maybe it needs more delicious grapes. I know Anton and Charles are working their asses off, so that helps a great deal when it comes time to quit or push harder.

Did a little shoulder work to try and balance things out. 3x30 shoulder things that Leah showed me.
Then did some bridges because I wanted to make sure I felt the pain for the next few days.
Bridges were interesting. The abs must have been worked during PT because my body was shaking like a strawberry in a blender.
Finished it all off with 2x75 arm-haulers.

Ended up meeting another member of the XC team. Her name is Rose and apparently she's quite the runner. Nice gal. Good folks on the XC team.

This evening is going to be relaxed. Watch a little office, get some work done, and continue reading Into Thin Air.

Peace and Wellness.

PS. the itchy neck rash thing in gone. Whew.

Wednesday

Medium 6 today. Start out on campus at an easy pace and threw myself out of a mental loop by predicting how the rest of the run would go. That's not a great thing when foresight is negative foresight.
Decided to change it up and head to the arboretum. At least by running through the ghetto I have the opportunity to do some on/offs as at any time I might have to sprint for my life. However, I'm not sure if that would happen considering people usually stare and probably think, "what the fuck is that guy running from?" Kidding. Kidding.
Legs felt a little out of it. Also, the little 'click' between my big toe and toe #2 has come back. If I step on it just right it will 'click' and I can feel it shoot all the way to my pinkie toe. I hope it just means it's time for new shoes.
Was a little rushed for time tonight as I had decided to watch the volleyball game; however, there was no game. I guess I could have done a PT workout. Even if I had known it was canceled would I have really done it?
I guess it's just a little disappointing knowing that I have 'lost' a great deal of my PT fitness. Before, a 1-10-1 pyramid with Charles was great. Now, just doing a 1-5-1 is kicking my ass.
I'm pretty sure Anton is right. It's all mental. I guess my PT attitude isn't the best without one of the bad-asses (Charles or Anton) right next to me.

Any who, on a positive note, grapes are delicious. Also, water is fantastic. Especially when you're really thirsty. It's could quite be the best drink in the world.

When you've set your mind to something...
Never quit.

Ever.

Seezy...

means what? Six easy.

Did an easy 6 today to the arboretum. Legs were a little tired today. Breathing a little labored. Although, the cooler air seems to be having a positive effect of overall breathing during these runs.

Behind the left knee is becoming an annoyance. Leah, a certified personal trainer and exercise physiologist, she found a nice tender spot just behind the knee that when pushed, magically makes me jump 8 feet off the floor.
She says the remedy is terrible, agonizing massage will help. I'm not so sure about that. How making it hurt worse will make it better. Of course it will be better after lots of pain. Anything feels better after stopping inflicted pain. Oh well, I hope she knows what she talking about.

Planning another easy 6 tomorrow, and perhaps some soccer or frisbee.

Woo, it's fun to sled, but not be cold.

Isn't it weird how positive and negative attract, yet, with people, it tends to be the opposite.

PFT Day, Woo!!!

Well, today was the day for PFT (physical fitness test). First off, headed off to class this morning and it turned out to be the best class (at least for this particular class) that we have had thus far. Stellar! A good way to start the day.
Next, I headed off to lunch and filled the belly, headed of to class again only to find out that it was canceled. Good news considering it gave me the opportunity to study for the midterm that was coming up in the evening.
Studied this afternoon, hung out with Jo, and headed off to murder this test. Maybe murder isn't the best word, but some just to say that I planned on dominating this test. I feel the test went well. It maxed out the mind and pushed it to the edge. Maybe a little exaggerated. Although, maxing out was the theme of the day.
After telling that test who's boss I headed out for PFT!
Started with a 4 mi. wu, 30:30 (7:37 mi. pace).
1.5 mile max 8:41 (5:47 mi. pace)
Headed to the gym for pull-up, push-up, sit-up max.
Warmed up with some pull-ups, then maxed. Goal was 11, got 12.
Push, goal was 65+, got 55. Not the best performance. Hit the wall at 35 and collapsed at 55 at 2 min. Lots of weakness leaving the body. A good effort and lots of grunting.
Sit-up, 79.5, goal was 85+. Not sure why but the neck felt a lot of work with this set. Stopped for a second at 1:58 to see how much time had left, and decided to get in one more. Finished just past 2 min, so I'm counting it as 79.5.

I'm very happy with the run, pleased with pull, and have new goals and something to work towards for the push and sit.

Now it's time to hit the books again. Down some bananas and oranges, and spend some quality time with Jo.

Looking forward to brother Charles and brother Anton's results. HOO-CHA!

Itchy Neck Syndrome

Good evening,

after my long run through the woods of the National Arboretum a red rash appeared on my neck. I thought nothing of it until it lingered and itched. Well, it's still here. I wonder what it could be. It's not spreading, it's itchy, it's red, and it has not improved much in a week. My plan is to just ignore it until it becomes unbearable or goes away.

Had a great run today back at the Arboretum. Jo tagged along as she had just recently arrived from New York and had not yet run. The plan was 6-10 easy. Well, we did an easy 2 mi. wu to the Arboretum and I was feeling good. It was quite cool out today, but decided to go without the shirt. Ended up doing a 6.2 mi medium/tempo hill run. Felt great. A bit of burning on the uphills and a strong steady breathing rhythm the entire time. A few difficult slumps to push through but nothing out of the ordinary. The weather was perfect for this run. Not hot, and not too cold, but just right. It was one of those days that is you're running it's perfect, but as soon as you stop you freeze.

Jo did a 2 mi. hill workout while I did my run. We timed it just right and finished within two minutes of eachother at the front gate. Took a quick stretch and headed back with a 2 mi. cd. Got back, hit the shower and went to eat.

The heart has been pumpin' pretty strong this evening, which usually means I'm dehydrated. Took a casual heart rate count for 1 min. and came up with 46. That's pretty good I think. Although, when I breath in my heart rate speeds up, and when I exhale it slows down considerably. Hmm, wonder what that means.

The legs have loosened up again, but it's time for new shoes, as I can feel a little irritation on my left heel. Hopefully I can get my mits on some Saucony Omni-6's. They worked really well in the past. If things go to plan, I will get in a PTF tomorrow evening after class, but it's all going to depend on food before hand. If I eat too soon before the PFT I will postpone, but who knows. We'll see.

Looking foreward to week number two of the program. 6 a day with an extended long on the weekend. Weeks 2 here we come!

The Lone Sturdy Tree

There once was a lone sturdy tree. It was very lonely and quite sturdy.
One day, there was a big storm. It was very windy, yet, the tree stood--because it was so sturdy.
Understand what I'm trying to say?

Yesterday I ran 15 mi. around the arboretum. The run was pretty good, but I felt awesome afterwords. I must have been a little high. I was very tight. Today, I'm still tight. Really not sure why.

Today, I did not run. Woke up relatively early, went to class, took a test, ate food, went to homecoming football game, then soccer game, took pictures, dinner, pictures again, now I'm back. Back for more studying.

Tomorrow, I will try to get in 10, and maybe a PT set. Have to get in shape for Monday's PFA challenge set by Charles. Bring on the pain!!!

Right now, I'm eating craisins and raisin lookin' things. They are not raisins. They are a little larger. They are tasty.

The legs are a little tight. I should eat more bananas and drink more water.

I wonder where Charles and Anton run. What do their routes look like.....

The early hours of the next day

Well, I successfully didn't run again today.
Had a big anatomy exam at 4 and spent all morning/afternoon studying. Then, when it was over I decided to run around and play soccer instead. It still involved running, but not a specific 5 miles.
I plan on playing catch-up tomorrow and doing an easy 15 or so.
I keep reading Charles's blog (http://cdupreezrun.blogspot.com/) and see how he's pushing though it and sticking to the plan. Way to go Charles. Keep going.
Up late again tonight working on stuff due for tomorrow. Then, after tomorrow's run it's back to the books for an exam Sat. morning, Monday evening, and next Wednesday. Whew. It's been a "fuck-busy" week so far. Bring it on mother fu%*#rs. I can take it.
It's almost 1:30am and I have class at 9am. I'm typing this with my running shorts and shoes on, ready to run. But, I'm not sure if I'm going to go through with a run tonight. I'm not sure if it's worth giving up tomorrow study progress by skimping on sleep. Running is important and I have a goal in mind, but right now it's second to school. A little sad to say that, but I must prioritize.
I've been pondering some ways to prevent boredom for these upcoming long runs. I'm wondering if I should try to make my long runs into some sort of small fundraiser. Perhaps for a group here on campus. I will tell them I can run for x amount of cents or dollars per lap on the track. What I won't tell them is that I will already have a distance planned. I wonder if that would be a good idea.
Stay with the program Charles and Anton. I know I've missed that past two days, but I'm still in it.
Peace and Love brothers and sisters.

Success

Today was the third day of the new workout program. I successfully did not complete today's run. Instead of saying I didn't run. Boo hoo. I'm going to say I achieved not running. It was a busy day. Quite busy.
Have a midterm tomorrow. That should be interesting.
Went to a presentation today about technology and it's influence on the Deaf world. That too was very interesting.
Not much to talk about today, spent a great majority of it studying.

Apparently I have a hair growing in my ear. I think it's kind of gross. I want it out. Ever since I found that out my ear has been irritating me. Mental? I bet.

Here is what I did today:
woke up at 9, showered, went to class, made up a presentation on the spot by blowing air into bottles, studied, went to lunch, studied, went to class, studied again, had practicum where we practiced patient counseling, went to dinner, saw a girl that looked exactly like Bridget, stole a sandwich, studied, met Jo to give her stolen sandwich, chatted for a bit, went to Rathskellar and studied, watched the last part of the men's soccer team lose, studied, chatted with Leah, talked with Jo, studied again, and now blogging.

I'm not sure how to make this blog any more interesting.

The arms and shoulders are a little sore from yesterday. YES! That means I worked.

I wonder what the Charles and the Anton are up to.

Tuesday, 10.24.08

Woke up early this morning. Long day of 3.5 hours of sleep. It wasn't bad.
Did lots of hearing screenings today. Saw lots of ear wax.
Have lots to do with school. Should be working on it right now, but am not. I tend to work on it late when everything has calmed down.
Did an easy 6 mi tonight around campus. Trying to follow Charles's running plan. Going well so far.
Mini-PT workout after run. Some push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, 25 dips, 75x2 arm haulers. The sit, push, and pulls were minimal enough they weren't even worth counting.
Behind the left knee has a similar feeling to it.
When I was doing more miles prior to the Lincoln to Omaha run I had a tight spot behind my right knee that wouldn't go away. Icing and stretching didn't help. When I arrived to DC it faded as I reduced miles dramatically.
I'm a little worried that the back of the left knee is starting to do the same thing considering I just had a decent long run last Saturday. I hope the easy weekday miles will keep it at bay. If not, I'm not sure how to blend long runs with preventing injury. Will see how it goes.
Stopped and watched the girls soccer team for a bit. They did ok. I hope they at least had fun considering the score was 0-10 when I left.
Well, I'm off to study anatomy now. Have some midterms, tests, and papers coming up.
Also, in one of our classes we are going to be graded on how much fun the class has, while we mimic a song, using bottles filled with water. Honestly it's quite silly. I plan to stand in front of the class, blow in the bottle at random times, laugh sporadically to boost the "fun-ness" level, and then stop after doing this for 10 minutes. Hopefully someone will see how ridiculous this presentation really is.

If a man, on a corner, was selling a magic machine, I would buy it.

The Begining?

It's quite often that Charles, http://cdupreezrun.blogspot.com/, is my inspiration to do something spectacular. This time, it's all about blogging.
I guess I'll talk a little about running. I finally got in a decent long run in this last Saturday. It was a beautiful day and I was at a great place to run. 27 mi. has been the longest since I have arrived.
Other than running, school has been very busy. Sometimes it's a little difficult, but that's that point. It should be challenging.

Within the past few months I met a girl. She's real nice and pretty. Although, she's religious, and I'm not. It's not going to work out. Bummer.

It's 2 in the morning right now, and I'll be getting up at 5:30am. Hmm, perhaps I should get some sleep. Sleep only seems desirable when you're in it. Although, maybe I should start practicing getting regular amounts of sleep. It might be beneficial.

Tonight I did an short, medium pace 2 mi @ 7:07 pace. Then, a 5:57 mile on the track, and an easy 7:45 cool down. I wanted to feel fast. It worked a little bit. Then I went to the gym for some pull-ups and sit-ups. That is all.

Mon
